Mid-Century 48 Carat Diamond Platinum Necklace, Circa 1950s

A continuous vine of diamonds wraps the neck in this necklace, marquise and pear-shaped stones forming leaf-like clusters along straight baguette "stems" that give the whole piece a botanical, naturalistic rhythm rather than a rigid geometric repeat. Eighteen stones over a carat each anchor the center, graduating outward into smaller diamonds as the necklace tapers toward the clasp at the back — a construction choice that keeps the visual weight concentrated at the front while the piece still lies flat and comfortably around the neck. Platinum was the only metal capable of holding 324 individually set diamonds securely while staying nearly invisible beneath them, letting the stones themselves define the entire silhouette. The tapering width, from 16mm at the center down to 11mm at the clasp, is a hallmark of fine 1950s necklace construction, designed to follow the natural curve of the collarbone. Stamped "PT."
