Open Oval Rope-Accent Ear Clips in 18K Gold, circa 1970s
SKU: E.BB.2
A bold pair of 1970s ear clips formed as open ovals of smooth, high-polish 18K gold, each pierced at the base by a length of twisted gold rope that loops through the opening and doubles back on itself. The contrast between the two elements with one broad and mirror-bright, the other tightly corded, is what carries the design.
The open silhouette was central to 1970s gold jewelry, when designers moved away from solid forms toward outlines and negative space, letting the skin show through and using the gap to make a piece read larger than its weight. At 1.25 inches these frame the lobe rather than covering it.
At 36 grams the pair has real heft, and the polish is original and unbroken throughout. Fitted with hinged omega clips and posts, so they suit pierced ears and hold securely. Stamped 750 for 18K gold.
