Victorian Shell Cameo and Cultured Pearl Necklace, Large 3-Inch Cameo

A large hand-carved shell cameo, 3 x 3 inches, depicts a classical female profile in high relief, her wavy hair gathered with carved flowers and her shoulder draped in flowing fabric — the kind of deep, sculptural carving that distinguishes fine Victorian shell work from flatter, mass-produced examples. The cameo is set in an ornate yellow gold octagonal bezel with pierced filigree detailing at the corners, giving the mount its own decorative presence beyond simply framing the shell. The pendant hangs from a 16-inch strand of 62 cultured pearls, each approximately 6.5mm and individually hand-knotted between beads, finished with a marquise-shaped gold filigree clasp set with a single pearl. The cameo itself dates to the Victorian era, while the pearl strand and clasp are mid-20th century; a well-matched pairing rather than a period-uniform piece, and one that gives this necklace real wearability alongside its antique centerpiece.
