Vintage Italian Multi-Gem Bombe Cocktail Ring, 18K Yellow Gold, circa 1960s
SKU: RO.BB.121
Thirty-four round brilliant gemstones crowd the dome of this ring in a checkerboard of color: peridot green, amethyst violet, blue topaz, pink tourmaline, and both yellow and blue sapphire, each stone claiming its own pool of light rather than blending into the next. The bombé shape does the real work: gold swells upward from a narrow shank into a full, rounded mass, so the stones sit high and catch light from every angle as the hand moves. Italian workshops leaned hard into this kind of maximalist color-mixing through the 1960s, pairing bold volume with cheerful, unmatched gemstones rather than a single dominant stone; a reaction against the restraint of the prior decade. The reverse is pierced in a lattice pattern beneath each stone, standard practice for keeping a piece this substantial from feeling heavy while still supporting thirty-four individual prong settings.
Excellent vintage condition; stones are secure in their prongs with no visible chips, and the only wear is light oxidation in the pierced gallery underneath, typical of the setting's age. Stamped with Italian hallmarks. Size 9. Weighs 27.0 grams total.
