Mid-Century White Opal and Diamond Platinum Ring, Circa 1950s

SKU: RO.HA.27

A large oval cabochon opal commands the center of this ring, its polished dome catching light in shifting flashes of blue and green that move as the hand turns; the defining trait of genuine precious opal, and the reason cabochon cutting is used instead of faceting. Twenty round brilliant diamonds circle the stone in a tight halo, their steady white sparkle acting as a fixed frame against the opal's constantly shifting color play. The platinum setting splits into multiple thin bands as it moves down toward the shank, a construction choice that lightens the ring's visual weight and lets the eye focus entirely on the center stone. This kind of bold, color-forward cocktail ring was characteristic of 1950s jewelry design, when opals and other colored stones took center stage over the more subdued palette of the prior decade. Excellent condition; no visible chips, cracks, or crazing to the opal.
