Fluted Rock Crystal Quartz and Diamond By-Pass Ring, 18K White Gold, Circa 1970s

Two carved rock crystal domes curve around the finger in a by-pass design, each one cut with fine parallel fluting that catches light along dozens of narrow ridges rather than reflecting as one smooth surface. The frosted, translucent quartz has a soft, almost glowing quality where light passes into the stone and scatters, distinct from the harder sparkle of a faceted gem. Where the two carved sections meet, small clusters of pavé-set diamonds bridge the gap, their bright white sparkle marking the crossover point and giving the eye a place to land between the two larger forms. The by-pass construction lets the ring wrap the finger with real visual movement, the two quartz halves seeming to twist around each other rather than sitting as a fixed, symmetrical whole. This kind of sculptural, hand-carved quartz work was a hallmark of 1970s cocktail ring design, when jewelers increasingly treated inexpensive stones as a canvas for serious lapidary craftsmanship.
