Mid-Century Star Sapphire and Diamond Ring in Platinum and Gold, Circa 1950s

A domed star sapphire commands the center of this ring, cut as a round cabochon rather than faceted so its six-rayed star can move across the stone's surface as it catches light. Tapered baguette and round brilliant diamonds surround the cabochon in a scalloped cluster, the baguettes' straight edges cutting a geometric frame against the sapphire's soft curve. The mounting itself is bicolor with platinum carrying the diamond cluster, and with 18K yellow gold worked into the shank which was a combination that was common in 1950s jewelry as platinum, still recovering from wartime restrictions, was often paired with gold to stretch the more expensive metal.

The stone's deep blue reads solid and opaque rather than glassy, typical of fine star sapphire, where color saturation and a sharp, centered star matter more than transparency.
